Useful Information >> Vaccinations

Don't forget your medical precautions and vaccinations. It’s important to visit a doctor or a specialist travel clinic as early as possible before your flight to Vietnam to allow time for any side-effects of the recommended courses of vaccinations to settle down.

:> For shorter stay (less than four weeks)

Hepatitis A can affect anyone. It's easily contracted through contaminated food and infected food handlers. (Havrix, two shots separated by two weeks).

Typhoid vaccination is particularly important because of the presence of Salmonella Typhi strains resistant to multiple anti-biotics in this region. It is found in many types of contaminated food and water.

:> For longer stays (More than four weeks)

Hepatitis B is now recommended for everyone, especially if you may be exposed to blood (for example, health-care workers), have sexual contact with the local population, or stay longer than six months in Asia. The Hepatitis B vaccine is also recommended for all infants and for children who did not complete the Hepatitis B series as infants.

Japanese Encephalitis is transmitted by infected mosquito bites to humans, causing inflammation of the brain, leading to permanent brain damage, neurological defiencies and high mortality rates. Japanese Encephalitis is recommended only if you plan to visit rural areas for four weeks or more, except under special circumstances, such as known outbreaks of Japanese Encephalitis. All children staying in Vietnam for more than four weeks should be immunized against Japanese Encephalitis.Rabies (pre-exposure), the virus, exists in the saliva of mammals and is transmitted from animal to animal or from animal to human, by biting and/or scratching. A Rabies vaccination is recommended if you may be exposed to wild or domestic animals, through work or recreation.

:> Regarding Malaria in Vietnam
As an overview, one can say that the risk of falciparum malaria is now so low in most areas of Vietnam that antimalarial drug prophylaxis is only indicated for travellers staying overnight in (remote) rural areas in some regions of Vietnam:

:>> CENTRAL HIGHLANDS: this includes highland areas of Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dac Lac, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan and LamDong provinces (below 1200m).

:>> SOUTH VIETNAM: Ngoc Hien district in Minh Hai province, the southern tip of the country.
The drugs of choice for prophylaxis in Vietnam are Mefloquine and Doxycycline (better tolerated).

In other rural areas, the risk of malaria is low, but cannot be excluded. This means that if somebody has a fever within the first year of visiting these areas, malaria should be suspected.

In the areas that are commonly visited by tourists, there is no need to take malaria prevention tablets. We don’t give advice about health or medical matters as we are expert in neither, and personal circumstances differ from person to person. Instead, we advise you to consult your own doctor if you are in any doubt about such matters. For more information, you can contact directly the Hanoi Family Practice, a well-respected international clinic established in 1994. Their website is www.vietnammedicalpractice.com.
