Destinations >> Highlands :> Highlands - Son La Son La is a mountainous province in the north-west of Vietnam. The province stretches along Vietnam’s western border with Laos and is bisected by the Da river which flows down through the province eventualy emptying into the large resevoir in Hoa Binh. Characterised by a rugged yet breathtaking mountainous landscape, the steep slopes of Son La's valleys are layered in hundreds of stepped rice terraces, while the lush valley bases are home to small and often very isolated farming villages. Son La is home to many different ethnic groups, including Thai, Kinh, Mong, Muong, Xinh Mun, Kho Mu, Khang, La Ha, Dao and etc. You’ll easy to find people living a very traditional lifestyle well away from the hustle and bustle of Vietnam’s commercial centres. Son La owns a subtemperate climate with two seasons: the dry and the wet. The average annual temperature is 21.40°C. Annual rainfall arerages 1,200 – 1,600mm and average humidity is 81%. The climate in the plateaus of Moc Chau and Na San is cool, fresh and advantageous to the development fo agriculture and tourism. :> Son La Prison The Son La prison is located in the center of Son La town, on the top of Khau Ca hill from which you can see the whole view of the town. The prison was built by French colonialism in 1908. In 1930 – 1945, it was expanded and became the place where detained revolutionary soldiers. It was considered a steel prison and a hell on earth to stamp out strong struggle of prisoners. The prison was regarded as a school providing the Vietnamese Revolution with excellent communists like Truong Chinh and Le Duan.
