:> Highlands - Mai Chau

Nestled in the mountainous regions of north Vietnam, southwest of Hanoi in Hoa Binh province, Mai Chau has a population of about 47,000 inhabitants that belong to different ethnic minority groups such as the White Thai, H’mong, Dao, Muong, Tay, Hoa and Viet. It truly is a melting pot of ethnic peoples. The Mai Chau hill tribes, like those found in other parts of Vietnam, are warm and welcoming and famous for their handicraft skills.

For a thousand years, Mai Chau has been an ideal spot for subsistence rice farming, fishing, gardening, and the development of a unique version of White Thai culture. Over the centuries of tumultuous change that Vietnam has undergone, they have yet maintained their spoken language, means of livelihood, and the perpetuation of culture practices.

The valley of Mai Chau offer wonderful vistas with patch worked rice fields surrounded by perpetually green mountains shrouded in clouds and mist at their peaks. The hamlets of the White Thai sit amongst bamboos and appear as islands in the midst of the rice fields. Each house has been made mostly by hand of wood, bamboo, and palm thatch, stading on stilts. The dirt or gravel roads are always dotted with children playing and livestock. The air often has smokiness to it from the cooking fires.

The Thai culture also includes complex methods of textile production traditionally used form clothing, ritual, and trading. The natural and cultural environment has inspired a huge repertoire of songs and dances executed by men and women at festivals and different celebrations of significant life events. Every Sunday, the market brings a lot of people into town, where traditional Thai dishes are made and traditional dances are performed.

Mai Chau is a bright green in spring and this green transforms into golden hues in autumn as the rice approaches harvest. It should be a perfectly useful way to spend your life while in Mai Chau by taking the time to watch these transitions of colour.
