This is one of the most beautiful, unaffected and untouristed areas of Vietnam. The northwest is famous for its resort town of Sapa in Lao Cai province, perched 1,500m above sea level and the country's highest peak, Fansipan, rises to 3,142m. Several ethnic groups such as the H'mong, Dzao, Kinh, Tay, Day, Hoa, and Xa Pho live in this region. Sapa and its surrounding areas are the best places for trekking and mountain biking in Vietnam. One night at homestay is also a lifetime lasting memory of many travellers. Homestay is the best way for you to experience the local culture and their daily life.
Up, up and away from the coast is the northeast part. It is home to Ba Be National Park, and its beautiful lakes, and the stark mountains around Cao Bang, a base for meeting the Montagnard minorities who have made it their home. Ban Gioc Waterfall is also located in the area. The northeast has two border crossings to China, one on the coast at Mong Cai that is seldom used, and the other near the bustling town of Lang Son, called Huu Nghi Bordergate. The highlands of the northeast are well off the tourist trail and a good place to do some exploring as much as travelling. To travel to the highlands, you can hire a jeep and driver or do it by motorbike. Local bus is also available but it takes a lot longer. Regardless of which method you elect, you are guaranteed to pass through spectacular ravines and over breathtaking passes.
