:> Coastal Lowlands - Vung Tau

Vung tau is a capital of Ba Ria – Vung Tau, 125 kilometres Southeast of Ho Chi Minh City. It has traditionally been a significant port, particularly during Vietnam’s period of French rule. Today, the city is importance as a shipping port has diminished, but it still plays a significant role in Vietnam’s off-shore oil industry. Vung Tau is the only petroleum base of Vietnam where crude oil and gas exploitation activities dominate the city’s economy and contribute principal income to Vietnam’s budget and export volume.

Vung Tau is famous for its extensive sandy beaches. Visitors prefer sightseeing at Front Beach (Bai Truoc) but go swimming in Back Beach (Bai Sau). Back Beach is well-known for its over 10 kilometres of find sand seaside. As Vung Tau is only 125 kilometres away from Ho Chi Minh City, it is a favourite resort destination for those wishing to get away from the noisy and polluted city. In recent years, the number of foreign tourists visiting Vung Tau increased. Vung Tau is also home to one of Vietnam’s most well known golf courses.

Hotel accommodation in Vung Tau is suitable for all tastes, ranging from Luxury four-star hotels to guesthouses. Many of them are concentrated on the Back Beach and Front Beach. Other beaches like Pineapple beach and Mulberry beach are small and safe for swimming while Nghinh Phong beach are suitable for surfing. The pristine and scenic beach of Long Hai, 14 kilometres from Vung Tau, lies along the Chau Long and Chau Vien mountains. The beach has many sand dunes and faire slop, making it an ideal place for relaxing and swimming.

Vung Tau is also interest for religious reasons. It has about 14 Catholic wards with active services. A notable monument in the city is a large statue of Jesus, constructed on a hill-top by Vietnam’s Catholic minority. It was completed in the early 1970s. The Thich Ca Phat Dai pagoda and Niet Ban Tinh Xa temple, both Buddhist sites, are also significant, drawing pilgrims from around the country.

:> Con Dao Island
Originally a prison for patriots and revolutionists during the French and American resistance, Con Dao Island today is a national park including 14,000ha of sea and 6,000ha of forest on 14 islands. There is also a buffer zone that is 20,500ha wide. Con Dao National Park encompasses oceanic and coastal ecosystems such as mangrove forests, coral reefs and sea grasslands. Over 1,300 species of sea animals have been identified here. The park is the most important egg-laying area in Vietnam for sea turtles.

The best time to visit Con Dao Island is from March to June, when the sea is calm. Some of those beaches include Dam Trau, Hang Duong and Phi Yen where visitors can relax and enjoy the warm temperature. The ocean around Con Dao Island is a heaven for sea life and the splendid forest cloaks the land. This is ecotourism at its best. Clean, smooth sand banks, blue sea, dolphins jumping and racing after boats, tropical almond trees swinging in a cool sea breeze, peaceful narrow roads, and forest covering most of the island, make Con Dao seem like heaven to visitors from far and wide.

:> Long Tan – the Old Battlefield
The battle of Long Tan is arguably the most famous battle fought by the Australian Army during the Vietnam War. The battle was the Australians’ first major engagement in Vietnam. Vietcong and regular North Vietnamese troops had gathered to attack the Nui Dat base camp, which was in VC territory. A group of 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers were dispatched to find the enemy, who had fired mortars into the base overnight.

What they found was an enemy contingent of more than 2500 troops in a rubber plantation at Long Tan. Battle raged through the afternoon and into the early night, in torrential rain. Eighteen Australian soldiers lost their lives. The next day the Australians counted 245 enemy dead on the battlefield. As many as 500 Vietnamese might have died. But Nui Dat was secure.
