Destinations >> Coastal Lowlands :> Coastal Lowlands - Danang :> Da Nang City itself The name “Danang” originates from the Cham language, meaning “big river” given that the city is built along Han River. During the Vietnam War, Danang was a US military town with the greatest concentration of military personnel in South Vietnam. Located roughly midway between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, Danang is the main gateway to Central Vietnam and to explore several fascinating UNESCO World Heritage sites. These include the former Imperial City of Hue 100 kilometers to the north, as well as the ancient town of Hoi An and My Son Cham Sanctuary – 30 kilometers and 70 kilometers respectively to the south. Geographically, Danang marks the end of the tropical zone on the north and offers a pleasant year-round climate. Its town is situated on the west bank of the Han River in parallel with the long, thin seaside land strip on the eastern side. Up in the northern end of the east bank are Tien Sa Port and Monkey Mountain while the northern end of the west bank is the Bay of Danang with Thanh Binh Beach and Nam O Beach embracing the west of the bay. Long overshadowed by the more well-visited Hoi An further south, Danang is more like a work-a-day Vietnamese city, with few traces of blatant tourism. In fact, Danang resembles a sleepy country town rather than a city – its “rush hour” is dozens of giggling schoolgirls on bicycles, with their white silk ao dais, wafting in the breeze. Danang City itself hasn’t many tourist attractions to speak of, although it certainly offers a laconic, amiable charm and is endearingly friendly. Its strategic position is now being promoted as a major selling point by regional tourism authorities. :> China Beach China Beach was best known as an Edenic respite from the hell of combat. During the Vietnam War, thousands of American G.I.s spent their leave surfing the 30-kilometer golden beach near the central coastal city of Danang. The beach is composed of white sand, is fringed with palm trees and overlooks the South China Sea. The sea is good for swimming all year round especially in summer from May to August because of the mild wave, the water temperature and the safeguard team that works from 5am to 8pm every day to ensure safety for tourists. Other activities here are fishing, water-skiing, diving and yacht race. Most beaches are easily accessible by means of transport. :> Marble Mountains Marble Mountains or Ngu Hanh Son is one of the Vietnam ’s most spectacular natural wonders. Ngu Hanh Son is a cluster of five mountains that represent the five elements: Earth, Fire, Water, Wood and Metal. The mountain offers the subtle and poetical ambience full with pagodas, grottoes, trees, mixed sounds of pagoda bells, murmuring waves and sea. Almost two hundred years ago, King Minh Mang came here and named the mountain, grottoes and pagodas around the area. These are natural grottoes and pagodas that reflect well of the harmony of natural and man-made beauty. Many cultural and historical stamps have the pictures of these 19th century pagodas and towers and the 14th and 15th century Champa sculptures printed on them.
