:>> Religions & Beliefts - Confucianism

Confucianism began in China in the sixth century B.C and was introduced to Vietnam in early Chinese domination period. Even after the Chinese were pushed out of Vietnam, their influence on the life of Vietnamese people remained. It’s a moral doctrine advising people that they have a part of responsibility in their fate that they must love one another, and must not think of abstract things of the next world.

Confucianism emphasized on building a peaceful and stable society in which the relationship between people, especially between members in a family like fathers and sons, husbands and wives etc. were prescribed. For example, in a family, the father is highly respected and completely rules the family and the household.

Due to above important feature, Confucianism was chosen by most of Vietnamese feudal dynasties as the National religion. The official adoption of Confucianism was recorded in 1070 when King Ly Thai To built Van Mieu (the Temple of Literature) and Quoc Tu Giam in 1076 to worship Chu Cong and Khong Tu. In the 15th century, due to the need of constructing a unified nation, a centralized administration and a social order, Confucianism replaced Buddhism and became the national religion under the Le dynasty.

Confucianism took root deep into the social and political structure, the system of education and examinations and the circle of Confucian scholars gradually dominated social and moral life. However, Confucianism wasn’t accepted in its entire system, but only in specific factors, especially on politics and morality.
