Its 22,000 hectares of dense forest is bisected by an 18km metalled road running the length of the reserve. Located only 120km southwest of Hanoi and nestled between the provinces of Ninh Binh, Hoa Binh and Thanh Hoa, Cuc Phuong boasts engaging cultural and wildlife heritage and enchanting scenery. Magnificent limestone mountains rise up majestically from the green rice-terraces and traditional stilt houses of the Muong hill-tribe. Covered in a dense forest, they form a habitat for around 2,000 species of trees including primeval forest, vines, tree ferns and orchids. The park is known for its varied populations of primates, and its many bird species. In the spring, dense clouds of butterflies mass in patches of sunlight.
One of highlight s of Cuc Phuong is the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre (EPRC). Orphans and injured primates are accommodated prior to their phased reintroduction to the wild. Semi-evergreen forest can also be found, along watercourses and on the few low-lying hills. Yok Don is bisected by the Srepok River, a major tributary of the Mekong River. The national park contains numerous small (and often seasonal) tributary streams of the Srepok River.
